Stewardship

Have you ever planned a party, prepared all of the food and drinks, only to have everyone cancel on you?  I know we have.  It’s frustrating, after all of the hard work, to have all of the food just sitting there, going to waste.  Jesus tells a parable of a King who prepared a banquet for his son’s wedding celebration.  When all of the invited guests were summoned to attend, they refused to show up!  The King was infuriated and had his soldiers destroy them.  He then sent his servants to go out and to invite everyone, good and bad alike, to the banquet.  Jesus told this story and at the time, it referenced Jesus being rejected by the Jewish people.

If there is one thing I take away from this story, it’s the part were the King tells his servants to go out and compel the good and bad alike to come to the King’s table.  What a good reminder it is today for us to remember, the King has set a table in Heaven and our job is to go out on behalf of the King and to bring people to His table.

One of my favorite songs growing up was by Audio Adrenaline entitled Big House. The words say, “It’s a big, big house, with lot’s and lot’s of room, it’s a big, big table, with lot’s and lot’s of food, a big, big yard, where we can play football, a big, big house, it’s my Father’s house.”  There is room for everyone at God’s table!

We have no doubt seen our share of tragedies around the world this year.  Terrorism, storms, and earthquakes to name a few.  And for many, they question, “Why are these things happening?”  I’m reminded of this verse found in Luke 21:25:

“And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. 26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Mane coming on a cloud with power and great glory. 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”

If I summarize the previous verse in a nutshell, Jesus is coming back soon!  With all the tragedy in the world, now isn’t the time to bury our heads in the sand, but it’s time for us to stand up and lift up our heads!  We need to be living with the urgency in our hearts that people are dying everyday and stepping into an eternity of either Heaven or hell.  We don’t have a lot of time left.  The question for us today is this, are we going to be bringers, doing everything we can to get people to God’s table?

People say all the time something that sounds spiritual but that is actually scripturally inaccurate.  They will say “Let’s pray for the lost.”  Jesus didn’t say to pray for the lost, he said to pray for the laborers.  He explained that the harvest or the lost are already ready, they are all around us.  Have you ever looked around?  There will always be lost people!  We don’t need to pray for them, we need to pray for people to have the courage and boldness to reach them, to invite them to the table. My hope for all of us today, myself included, is that we will go out to the good and bad alike and invite them to the table.  That we will love the lost like Jesus loved the lost.  That we will let people know that there is a God out there who loves them.  Remember, there is only one thing on earth that we can take to Heaven, and that’s people.  God loves people, let’s love people too.
